The Hough Pool is looking for children and families who would like to take swimming lessons but need assistance paying for them. Scholarships are available from the Vancouver Rotary Club and other private donors. These scholarships cover one session of swimming lessons at the Hough Pool. Please feel free to fill out an application at the Hough Pool office. To sponsor a child, see Pool Pals.
Do you or your children routinely get water up your nose? Here's a secret tip that swim instructors have been using for years to prevent it. When putting your face under water or jumping in, try humming as you do so. Humming automatically forces air out your nose and blows bubbles. Just remember to hum continuously, even when under water.

Half hour long classes where parents and babies swim together with teacher-led instruction. Children learn beginning swimming skills, such as floating, breath control, and water safety, while parents learn how to properly assist their children in the water. For children 6 months to 3 years. All children must be accompanied by an adult in the water.
Preschool Classes
Pre classes are for children 3-7 years of age.
Pre - A: A beginning level that helps children get comfortable swimming without their parent while learning the fundamentals of swimming. Perfect for a child ready to move out of Parent and Tot classes.
Pre - B: For children who are comfortable putting their face under water and have a strong kick. Swimmers learn how to kick and float independently, as well as breathing techniques.
Pre - C: For children who can swim independently for at least 5 feet on their front and at least 5 feet on their back. Children must also be comfortable putting their face underwater for 5-10 seconds. Participants learn front arm strokes, and beginning side breathing.
Pre - D: For children who can swim independently for at least 10 feet on their front with arm strokes, and at least 10 feet on their back. Children must also be comfortable putting their face underwater and performing bobs. Children learn the full front crawl (arm strokes and kicking with correct side breathing), back crawl (back arm strokes and kicking), and an introduction to the Elementary Backstroke.
School Age Classes
Our levels 1-6 are for participants 7 years of age and older.
Level 1: A beginning level for children who have little or no previous swimming experience. The class focuses on becoming comfortable going underwater, floating with help and independently, and learning the fundamentals of swimming.
Level 2: For Children who are able to swim independently and perform bobs (going completely underwater, blowing out air from the mouth and nose, and quickly popping up for a breath of air). Swimmers learn arm strokes on the front and back, as while as beginning side breathing.
Level 3: For children who are comfortable swimming front crawl for at least 15 yards, and back crawl for at least 15 yards by themselves. Swimmers learn full front crawl with side breathing, refine their back crawl, and are introduced to elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and scissors kick.
Level 4: For children who are able to independently swim full front crawl for at least 25 yards, and full back crawl for at least 25 yards. Participants refine their front and back crawl, learn the full elementary backstroke, full breaststroke, full sidestroke, and are introduced to Butterfly. This is a hard level, and it is common for children to spend more than one session in level 4.
Level 5: For children who can swim at least 50 yards of front crawl, 50 yards of back crawl, and 25 yards of the following strokes: elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Swimmers learn bilateral breathing, full butterfly, underwater swimming, and flip turns.
Level 6: For children who can swim 50 yards of front crawl with bilateral breathing, back crawl for 50 yards, 25 yards of: elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke, and 15 yards of butterfly. Participants improve all of their strokes, learn lifeguard skills, build endurance, and work on flip turns and other pre-swim team skills.
